How to Improve Laptop Battery Life on Windows 10

Laptops are increasingly powerful and portable device for getting serious work done on the go. But have you optimized your laptop to improve battery life because of battery life is a crucial part of any laptop you cannot ignore this whether it is brand new or old.

The battery life of laptop is different based on applications and software installed. If you are playing high resolution games on regular basis then it will definitely burn more power. But laptop misconfiguration will also reduce the life of your laptop battery.

1. Enable Battery Saver Mode

Windows 10 comes with built in feature to improve battery life, here we are talking about the battery saver. In windows device, many unwanted processes are running continuously in the background which burns more power easily.
Battery saver mode allows you to improve battery life by limit background activity and giving minimum power. When the charge level falls down below 20% the power saving mode automatically turns on and reduce the consumption of the power.
You can easily turn on or off this feature by click on Action Center at the bottom right corner of the task bar and here you can find Battery Saver button.

2. Turn Down Screen Brightness

Laptop display brightness is the biggest drain on your laptop battery. By reducing screen brightness can add 60 minutes more to your battery life.

You can easily adjust the screen brightness with the help of keyboard shortcuts by holding Fn key and press one of the function key.

You can also adjust screen brightness by click on Action Center at the bottom right corner of the task bar and here you can find Brightness sign icon.

3. Screen Brightness With Battery Saver Mode

If your battery saver mode is enabled then you can also control brightness in system setting. Simply search for Battery Saver in a search box and press enter button.

Here you can find Low screen brightness while in battery saver simply check this option to take effect.

4. Check Battery Usages By Apps

There are so many apps installed in windows and these apps are working in background as soon as your laptop is turn on. You must need to check the battery uses of app.

To check power uses of the particular app simply go to Battery Saver and click on “See which apps are affection your battery life” option.

Now go to Settings > Apps and click on the Startup button. Toggle off app one by one which are not necessary on startup.

Once turn off startup apps again go to Settings > Apps and click on Apps & features option. Uninstall the app that you are not using and consume more power.

5. Turn Off  Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

If you are connected to the internet via Ethernet cable and your wifi is enabled then your wifi network adapter continuously looking for a wireless network to establish connection. It consumes more power than your applications, so it is a good idea to turn off external sharing networks.

You can easily disable wifi and Bluetooth by enabling airplane mode. To disable Bluetooth go to Setting > Devices and click on Bluetooth & other devices option. Simply toggle off the Bluetooth to turn off.

6. Cut Down External Devices

External devices like pen drive, mouse, keyboard, printer, etc consume more power when connected to your laptop. So it is a good idea to disconnect all external device that are not currently being used.

7. Video Playbacks

If you are regularly watching video on your laptop then try to watch in low resolution can improve your laptop battery life.

Windows 10 new video playbacks feature allows you to do that. If you want to enable this feature then follow below steps.

  • The first step to go to Settings and click on Apps option.
  • Here you can find Video playback option simply click on in.
  • Under battery option click on drop down menu and select optimize for battery life option.
  • Don’t forget to check “I prefer video to play at a lower resolution when on battery” option.

8. Enable Power Mode

To enable power mode click on battery icon at bottom right corner of the task bar. Now slide button to the left side for best battery life.

9. Power & Sleep Settings

Avoid laptop in ideal state to improve battery life by setting up power and sleep option.

Simply search for power & sleep setting in search bar and hit enter button. Here you can adjust the screen sleep or dim time.

10. Avoid Over Charging

We have a habit to leave laptop plugged into charging even after fully charged. If your laptop is over charged then it will damage cells and your power backup will be reduce in limited time. So always avoid over charging of your laptop battery.

11. Turn Off Screen Saver

Screen saver consume more unnecessary power without any work being carried out. So always try to turn off screen saver or don’t use it.

12. Avoid Maxing Out RAM

Always take care of RAM properly. If your RAM out of memory then your system store information in a hard drive. That means when you access this information the system read from the hard drive. At this time hard drive required more power than RAM to complete an operation.

13. Turn Sound Down

The speaker required more power when a volume is high. So try to use headphone or down speaker volume to save some of your battery life.

14. Some Other Ways

  • Deactivate visual effects windows
  • Hibernation instead of standby
  • Activate high contrast mode
  • Turn off keyboard backlight if available
  • Avoid automatic updates and virus scan when runs on battery
